Blue-Collar Roots and Formative Influences

Colby Davis’s entrepreneurial journey is deeply rooted in his blue-collar upbringing. His father owned and operated his own plumbing company, providing Davis with a firsthand education in the skilled trades from a young age. This environment instilled a powerful work ethic but also offered a crucial, cautionary lesson. Davis observed his father’s “old-school mentality,” where the belief that “no one could do the job better than him” led to a relentless cycle of overwork. His father would work all day on job sites, return home for dinner, and then continue with plumbing work late into the night.

While this dedication provided well for the family, it came at a significant personal cost, including physical exhaustion and the need for knee and shoulder surgeries. More profoundly, it highlighted the precariousness of the owner-operator model: there was no corporate retirement fund, no paid sick leave, and no safety net if he was injured. This experience became a formative influence, teaching Davis not only the value of hard work but also, as he has stated, “what not to do”. His subsequent business philosophies—centered on building systems, empowering a team, and creating a sustainable enterprise—are a direct and deliberate response to the limitations he witnessed in his father’s business model. His passion for the industry was cemented early, as he gained hands-on experience in plumbing, pool renovation, roofing, and painting throughout his teens and early twenties.

Colby Davis Early Years: From Tradesman to Business Owner

At the age of 21, with a wealth of practical experience and determination, Colby Davis launched his own venture, Davis Painting. The company’s beginnings were lean and emblematic of a bootstrapping entrepreneur. His initial assets consisted of a small Ford Ranger truck, and his first office was a desk in his bedroom at his mother’s house.

For the first five years of the business, Davis replicated the intense, hands-on work ethic he had grown up with. He was the primary painter and operator, sacrificing nights and weekends and enduring the physical toll of the trade, including multiple pinched nerves. This period was characterized by immense effort and “the grind,” but it yielded impressive results. Within just three years of its founding, Davis Painting had grown by over 1600%, expanded its fleet to five vehicles, and employed a team of five to nine people. By 2017, the company was on a clear trajectory to surpass $1 million in annual sales. However, the unsustainable nature of this approach prompted a critical moment of reflection that would redefine his future and the future of his company.
