Anyone can put paint on a wall. What separates a paint job that lasts from one that fails is everything that happens before the finish ever goes on — and that’s where I built the standard.
The hardest projects taught me this. When you’re restoring a 250-year-old church or a historic home, you learn fast that the visible part of the work is a fraction of the real job. On a recent restoration, the surfaces came in with a moisture content of 32%. Coat over that and you’ve guaranteed failure no matter how good the product is. So the work became patient preparation: restoring every surface and bringing that moisture content all the way down from 32% to 2% before we committed to the finish. Hundreds of hours, most of it invisible to anyone who later walks in and says, “Wow, it looks brand new.”
That’s the standard I hold every project to, residential or commercial, historic or new construction. Detail first. Preparation first. Respect for the surface first.
It’s also why I still personally oversee the toughest projects we take on. Some jobs require a particular type of attention, and I’m not willing to delegate the things that determine whether a client is happy in five years, not just five days. Pride in the work isn’t a marketing line for me — it’s the reason the company exists.
Here’s what I’d want any homeowner to know when they’re choosing who to trust with their property: ask about preparation, not just price. Ask what happens before the first coat. Ask how they handle moisture, surface restoration, and the parts of the job you’ll never see. The answer tells you everything about whether the result will last.
That mindset — do it right, do the hard part, take pride in the details — is what we were built on, and it’s what every one of my crew carries onto every job site.
